유진 위그너.

1963년 노벨 물리학상 수상자로 폰 노이만과는 어릴 시절부터 절친이었고, 아인슈타인과도 꽤나 친분이 있었음.

I have known a grea many intelligent people in my life. I knew Max Planck (Nobel Prize 1918), von Laue (Nobel Prize 1914) and Heisenberg (Nobel Prize 1932). Paul Dirac (Nobel Prize 1933) was my brother in law; Leo Szilard and Edward Teller have been among my closest friends; and Albert Einstein was a good friend, too. But none of them had a mind as quick and acute as John von Neumann. I have often remarked this in the presence of those men and no one ever disputed me.

You saw immediaely the quickness and power of von Neumann's mind. He understood mahemaical problems not only in their initial aspect, but in their full complexity. Swiftly, effortlessly, he delved deeply into the details of the most complex scientific-problem. He retained it all. His mind seemed a perfect instrument, with gears machined to mesh accurtely to one thousandth of an inch.

폰 노이만을 본다면, 그의 두뇌가 얼마나 빠르고 강력한 지 알 수 있을 것이다. 그는 수학적 문제들의 간단한 측면만이 아니라, 전반적인 복잡함을 이해했다. 그는 쉽고 빠르게 가장 복잡한 과학적 문제들의 세부적 사항들을 깊이 다뤘다. 그리고 그 모든 것을 전부 기억했다. 그의 두뇌는 1000분의 1인치까지 완벽하게 맞물려진 완벽한 기계처럼 보였다.

Despite his singular achievements in mthemtics, Jancsi was raised to be well rounded. He knew English almost as well as Hungarian, perhaps from a tutor engaged a home. Eventually, he also spoke fluent German, French, and Italian.

수학에서의 성취를 제외해도, 그는 여러 면에서 출중했다. 그는 가정교육으로부터 배운 영어를 헝가리어만큼이나 유창하게 했다. 또한 그는 유창하게 독일어, 프랑스어, 이탈리어를 할 수 있었다.

But Jancsi's intelligence never appalled me. He was clearly better in mahemaics than I was. But so were many others; I was not a mahemaics prodigy. And I knew more physics than he did. I did not compete with von Neumann for prizes, scholarships, or positions.

그러나 그런 폰 노이만의 지능이 나를 경악시킨 적은 없다. 그는 분명 나보다 수학을 더 잘했지만, 나보다 수학을 잘하는 사람들은 많았다; 나는 수학에 천부적인 재능이 있지는 않았다. 그리고 나는 폰 노이만보다 더 물리학에 대해 잘 알고 있었다. 나는 폰 노이만과 상금, 장학금, 지위를 두고 경쟁하는 관계는 아니었다.

Einstein's friendships were confined to a small circle of collaboraors and friends from past days. I was lucky to be one of these. I knew Einstein for 20 years in princeton. I could not think quite a Einstein's level, but then no one could.

Einstein was a world-famous genius and people I knew used to remark, "You spend a good deal of time with Einstein. He has a perfect brain, doesn't he?" Well, I have never known wha is meant by a "perfect brain." Einstein was far slower than Jancsi von Neumann to derive mahemaical identities. His memory could be faulty, a least after 1933.

아인슈타인은 세계적으로 유명한 천재였고 사람들은 나에게 묻곤 했다. "당신은 아인슈타인과 많은 시간을 보내잖아요. 그는 완벽한 두뇌를 가지고 있죠?" 글쎄, 나는 "완벽한 두뇌"의 의미를 도무지 모르겠다. 아인슈타인은 폰 노이만보다 수학적 공식을 도출하는데 훨씬 오래 걸렸다. 그의 기억력은 적어도 1933년부터는 빈틈이 많았다. 

And he was hardly interested in the details of physics. For a man like Edward Teller, developing the details of a physics problem was passionaely important. For Einstein, it was not. In all spheres of life, Einstein's greaest pleasure was in finding, and laer expressing, basic principles.

그리고 그는 물리학의 세부 사항들에 거의 관심이 없었다. 에드워드 텔러 같은 사람들에게, 그런 물리학 문제들의 자잘한 사항들을 발전시키는 것은 매우 중요했다. 하지만, 아인슈타인은 그렇지 않았다. 평생동안, 아인슈타인의 가장 큰 기쁨은 근본적인 원리들을 발견하고 표현하는 것에 있었다.

But Einstein's understanding was deeper than even Jancsi von Neumann's. His mind was both more penetraing and more original than von Neumann's. And tha is a very remarkable staement.

그러나 아인슈타인의 이해는 폰 노이만의 것보다 더 깊었다. 그의 마음은 폰 노이만의 것보다 훨씬 더 깊은 곳까지 꿰뚫었고, 더 독창적이었다. 그리고 이것은 매우 놀라운 진술이다.

Einstein took an extraordinary pleasure in invention. Two of his greaest inventions are the Special and General Theories of Relaivity; and for all of Jancsi's brilliance, he never produced anything so original. No modern physicist has.

아인슈타인은 발명에 특별한 기쁨을 느꼈다. 그의 가장 위대한 두가지 발명은 바로 특수, 일반 상대성 이론이었는데, 폰 노이만의 그런 모든 명석함에도 불구하고, 그는 결코 그렇게 독창적인 것을 만들어내지 못했다. 현대의 어떤 물리학자도 해내지 못한 그런 독창적인 것들을 말이다.
